Meme Coin Snaps

  • The meme coin sector has been milked hard, with billions sucked out of the market. However, top meme coins are showing signs of life. The war is far from over and it’s back to the trenches everyone.

  • We saw the first country to launch a meme coin officially, CAR, but its swift demise shows that (sorry Shakira) this is probably not yet time for Africa.

  • Dave Portnoy joined the future of France (trench slang for the future of finance) and started aping meme coins, but soon dumped on followers and then berated them a la Andrew Tate-style for their stupidity!

7-Day Meme Coin Market Snapshot

The overall meme coin market cap went mostly sideways from $71.90 billion to $71.83 billion, even after SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce said meme coins are outside the agency’s jurisdiction, as CoinTelegraph reported.
Most of the top meme coins showed a highly correlated upward trend.
Bitcoin dropped after the CPI came in higher than expected but quickly recovered. Is it time to add BNB to the list of crypto majors—Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP and Solana—or should Solana be removed as it is not even in the top five tokens by market cap anymore?

Meme Coin Market vs Other Crypto Sectors

DeFiLlama's Narrative Tracker looked like a scene from Edge of Tomorrow. Back from the ded, baby! Memes outperformed Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana.
The 30-day trajectory showed a reversal for the first time in two weeks, but it’s still about 17% in the red.

Meme Coin News

Dave Portnoy Goes Degen

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy dropped into the Solana trenches, creating hype with his involvement in a token called JAILSTOOL, a coin making fun of his own persona.
View post on Twitter
After profiting nearly $70,000 from meme coin trades, Portnoy bought 57.16 million JAILSTOOL tokens for around $378 according to Solana Block Explorer. He accidentally sold them for over $119,000 but quickly rebought a smaller amount for $200,000, calling himself a "benevolent and heroic crypto Caesar."

Portnoy said he will hold until it hits a $1 billion market cap, and he even launched a merch line, promising token reinvestments tied to JAILSTOOL’s growth. Despite an initial surge to a $218 million market cap, the token dumped 83.6% from its peak. Portnoy, now sitting on a $264,000 loss, hasn't sold his holdings.

Controversial CAR Crash

On Feb. 10, the Central African Republic (CAR) announced the launch of its meme coin, CAR, on Pump.fun through President Faustin-Archange Touadéra’s official X account. The hype quickly surged, pumping it to a market cap of $527 million.
View post on Twitter
Doubts quickly surfaced, though, as people worried the announcement video might be a deepfake, especially because some AI tools even flagged it as possibly altered. The project’s website, registered via Namecheap just days before the launch, was suspended for abuse and its official X account was also taken down without explanation.

These red flags have raised doubts about whether CAR is a legitimate government-backed initiative or a possible scam. As of now, there’s no clear confirmation, and investigations are ongoing.

Kanye West Rejects $2M Offer

Kanye West (whose X account was deactivated after he went off the tracks again with antisemitic tweets), also known as Ye, claims he rejected a $2 million offer to promote a cryptocurrency scam. The scheme involved posting a scam crypto promotion to his 32.6 million followers and later claiming his account was hacked.

The offer included a $750,000 upfront payment for keeping the post live for eight hours, followed by a $1.25 million payout. West shared screenshots exposing the proposal and cut ties with the person who approached him.

What Can You Do Next?

  • Keep an eye on more countries launching meme coins.
  • Don’t just focus on one chain as you can see BSC performing well for now.
  • Meme coins are extremely volatile. Make sure to have a diversified portfolio.
  • Consider reinvesting some profits into safer crypto tokens or stables.
  • Be careful of launches where celebrities are involved.
