In the ongoing legal battle between the US and former <a href="https://en.coin-turk.com/binance-labs-invests-15-million-in-blockchain-game-developer-xterio/" data-wpel-link="internal">Binance</a> CEO Changpeng Zhao (CZ), the US Department of Justice (DOJ) has made a significant move by requesting a new protective order in the case. This development follows the final proceedings, including the postponement of CZ’s criminal sentencing to the end of April. CZ is facing a prison sentence for allegedly violating anti-money laundering (AML) regulations.

US Department of Justice has requested a protective order to safeguard sensitive information in the case against CZ. In their protective order request dated February 20, 2024, the department emphasized the need to restrict access to certain materials considering their sensitive nature. Both CZ and the defense attorneys reportedly did not oppose the protective order request.

According to the department, the discovery materials presented include sensitive witness interviews, third-party <a href="https://newslinker.co/category/finance/" data-wpel-link="exclude">financial</a> records, and third-party internal business records. The protective order outlined by the US Department of Justice aims to limit public access to such information, ensuring that only the defense attorney, members of the defense team, and the defendant himself can access it. 
The protective order also seeks to keep the identities of sensitive witnesses confidential, similar to recent efforts to seal unredacted letters and medical records. This move demonstrates the US Department of Justice’s commitment to cautiously proceed with the case and protect the privacy of individuals involved in the litigation. 
<h2 style="text-align: justify" id="strong-facing-up-to-20-years-in-prison-strong">Facing Up to 20 Years in Prison</h2> 
Regarding potential legal repercussions, CZ could face up to 20 years in prison for allegedly violating anti-money laundering laws. However, legal experts predict that CZ could receive an 18-month prison sentence for the charges against him. Currently, CZ cannot travel to his home in the UAE until the enforcement of his postponed sentence on April 30, despite being released on a $175 million bail and due to the risk of flight. 
As is known, CZ recently resigned from his position as Binance CEO due to the legal challenges he faced and agreed to pay a $50 million fine. The Binance exchange also had to accept a hefty fine of $4.3 billion.
